35. Цель и результат

В придаточных клозах цели используются союзы so that / in order that и иногда lest:

I went for a walk so that I could clear my head.
I left early in order that I might arrive on time.

In order that звучит более формально, чем so that.

She walked quietly lest she should wake the baby."

Lest – очень формальный союз.

В таких клозах, как правило, используются модальные глаголы - can, could, will, would, may и might.
Цель в настоящее время - can, will, or may.

He is saving money so that he can buy a hause.

Цель в прошлом - could, would, or might.
She went for a walk so that she would feel better."

! В разговорной идее та же идея обычно выражается с помощью инфинитива.

"He went for a walk so that he could get some air."
He went for a walk to get some air."

Еще примеры:

I went for a walk to get some fresh air.
I went to the shop to buy some milk.
he called me to ask for a favor."

В более формальной речи можно использовать инфинитив после in order:
He went for a walk in order to improve his fitness.
The company updated the software in order to fix several bugs.

В клозах результата употребляется союз so that (также как в клозах цели).

The machine broke down, so that he had to do the work by hand машина сломалась и нам пришлось делать работу вручную.

В разговорной речи он часто сокращается до просто so.

The movie was boring, so we stopped watching it фильм был скучный и мы перестали его смотреть

В такого рода клозах могут употребляться небольшие конструкции.

(1) so + adjective/adverb + that:
His speech was so clear that we could understand every word.
He spoke so clearly that we could understand every word.
(2) such + noun phrase + that:

It was such a hot day that we went to the beach

• Purpose: "I'm leaving now so (that) I'm not late."
• Result: "I left late, so I missed the train."
