3.14. Future Continuous

The procession is leaving the Town Hall now. It [will be passing] our house in about five minutes.
This time tomorrow I'll be lying on the beach
He [will be taking] a test at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

It [will be raining] on Thursday.
Mavis [will be working] on her thesis for the next three years.

The government [will be making] a statement about the crisis today.
We [will be going] to Dublin next week.
Later in the programme, I’ll be talking to the Minister of Education…
This time next year this part of the garden [will be looking] beautiful
Will you be going away this summer?
Our best player is injured and won’t be playing in the game on Saturday
Dr. Jones will be giving the same talk in room 103 at 10.00 next Thursday
Will you be driving to Glasgow, as usual?

Present Continuous:

We will be leaving/are leaving for Istanbul at 7.00 in the evening.

I'll be writing to you about that soon (без той модальности, которая может быть в ‘I'll write’)
A: Shall I pick up the laundry for you? B: Oh, no, don't make a special journey.
A: It's OK I'll be going to the shops anyway

Will you be staying in this evening?
Are you going to stay in this evening?
Will you stay with us again tonight?

3.15. Perfect Tenses

1. Present Perfect

Present Perfect:

The burglar came in through this window. Here are his footmarks
I ate the last of the eggs this morning

The French revolution [has influenced] every popular radical movement in Europe since 1800 (революция была более чем двести лет назад, но связь осталась).
Ann phoned five minutes ago (действие было только что, но говорящий не считает нужным связать этот факт с настоящим).

I’ve known love, but not true love
Have you been to Brazil?
I've written six letters since lunchtime

Have you (ever) been to Florence?
Did you go to Florence (last summer)?

You’ve ruined my dress!
The taxi has arrived
She has been given a camera

A telegram has arrived for you. Here it is.
I can't go on holiday because I have broken my leg (неправильно: ‘I can’t go on holiday because I broke my leg’.)

I've broken my leg. → My leg is broken now.
Have you read the Bible? → Do you know the Bible?
Some fool has let the cat in. → The cat is in.
Mary has had a baby. → Mary now has a baby.
All the wars in history have taught us nothing. → We know nothing.

This is the first time I've been here (уже пришел).
I've come to school without my glasses (so now I can't see to read).
She has spent many years in France (so now she probably knows a lot about France and the French).
Mr. Green has bought a car (so now he needn't use buses and trams).
Mr. Grey has been out of work for several months (so now he and his family are short of money).
I've finished my work (so now I can sit back and rest).
You haven't finished your work (so you must still go on working).
I've bought a copy of the "Concise Oxford Dictionary" (so now I possess this dictionary).
Mr. White has gone to Burma (so now he is not here).
I've finished the new Harry Potter book now, so you can borrow my copy if you like.
Have you turned the gas off? I don't like it to be on when I'm not at home.
I have already seen that movie.
Have you ever been to Beijing? - Yes, I've been there once/ Yes, I've been there often/ I've been there twice already/ I haven't been there yet.
Your nose is bleeding. Has somebody hit you?
A police inspector has been here (уже ушел). He has now gone next door.

Jack has just finished his homework.

I just came back; You told me already и т.п.

Present Perfect

Have you (ever) read "David Copperfield"?
Have you had any serious illness?
Have you ever been up in an airplane?

The journal was published every month from 1850 to 1888.
The journal has been published very month since 1850.

I've known her for years (неправильно: ‘ I know her for years’.)

That house was empty for ages - but now it's been sold.
That house has been empty for ages.

I have been a teacher since 1987.

I have lived in China
I have lived in London since 1970 (и сейчас там живу).

е. Present Perfect здесь заменяет Present Perfect Continuous). Часто в таких случаях с Present Perfect употребляются обстоятельства, указывающие на период, охватывающий и настоящее время: since 1970/for the last six years/ so far/ always и т.п.

3-16. Present Perfect

Have you been to the bank already?
Have you been to the bank yet?

since

I [have been] here since two o'clock (нельзя: ‘I am here since two o'clock ’)
We [haven't seen] George since 1980.
I've had no news of him since he sailed for Singapore.
I [have lived] in London since 1970.

for

I [have lived] in London for the last six years.
We [haven't seen] Helen for several months.
There [has been] no rain here for over three weeks.

so far

We have taken our holidays in August so far
So far we have had no trouble.

already/ yet

Have the children gone to school yet?
Could you clean the car? – I've already done it.
I've seen that film already.
Has the postman come yet?
Has Jack left yet?

ever/always/never/ often/several times и т.п.

Have you ever been to Iceland?
Man has always been a fighter
I have never been down a coal-mine.
She's never said 'sorry' in her life.
Have you ever seen a ghost?
I've often been there.
I've read this book several times.
How often have you been in love in your life?
I've sometimes thought of moving to Australia.

just/lately/recently

The cat has just had kittens.
She hasn't been well lately.

(Возможно, особенно в американском английском, и употребление past simple: ‘Не was here quite recently’.)

until now/till now/up to now/ up to the present (time)

Up to the present, everything [has been] straightforward.

Past Simple: Until now this mountaintop was considered inaccessible. We didn't know anything about the Russian style of architecture until now).

before

I've seen this film before.
I'm sure we've met before.

today/ this week (month, year и т. п.)

Have you done much work today ?
I haven't seen Harry this week.
It [has been raining] all day.
Jack [hasn't come] to school this morning.

Past Simple: ‘Did you get to school in time this morning?’)

Present perfect

She won’t be satisfied until she [has finished] another chapter.
I will return your book on Monday when/if I've read it.
If you [have done] your homework, you can watch TV.

3.17. Past perfect

1. Past perfect

By three o'clock he [had answered] only half the letters

Had they visited Brazil before?
The goalkeeper [had injured] his leg, and couldn’t play.

Mr. Phipps [had sung] in that choir for fifty years.

The house [had been] empty for ages.

They tell me that the parcel [has already arrived].
They tell me that the parcel arrived on April 15th.

Past Perfect:

They told me that the parcel [had already arrived].
The told me that the parcel [had arrived] on April 15th.

Таким образом предложение ‘The parcel had arrived on April 15th’ не имеет соответствия в Present Perfect (нельзя сказать ‘The parcel has arrived on April 15th’), так как является фактически аспектом от предложения в простом прошедшем.

We arrived to find that the train had left two minutes ago/at 10.25.

I opened my eyes again. The snake disappeared.
I opened my eyes again. The snake had disappeared.

During our conversation, I realised that we had met before. (неправильно: ‘ I realized that we met before/... have met before’).
When I arrived at the party, Lucy had already gone home. (неправильно: ‘ ... already went home/... has already gone home’).

Don Jose was a wealthy Cuban landowner who emigrated to Mexico in 1959. The agricultural reforms had begun a few months before this. He moved again in 1965 and made his home in the United States. He had made his fortune in growing sugar cane as a young man in Cuba, and he brought his expertise to his new home.

As soon as the teacher entered the classroom, he saw that one of the boys had drawn a sketch of him on the blackboard.
When Brown came to the school in 1980, Green had already been teaching there for five years.
When we arrived on the field, the match had already started.
On reaching the station, he found that his friends had just arrived.
When Ali came to England in 1982, he had already learnt to speak English well.
The bus driver was just about to start when he remembered that he had not filled the petrol tank.
We had got everything ready for them long before they arrived.
They had been to several parties during the Christmas holidays.

Past Simple:

We arrived at the station after the train had left / left.

Past perfect

I wondered who had left the door open.
I thought I had sent the cheque a week before.

"I have already read that book."
She told me that she had already read that book.

"They left the district a few months ago."
I was told that they had left the district a few months before/earlier.

"Where have you been? What have you been doing?"
Не asked me where I had been and what I had been doing.

"I visited Naples two years ago."
Mary told me that she had visited Naples two years before.

После ‘if’, ‘wish’ и ‘would rather’ Past Perfect выражает события, которые не произошли:

If I had gone to university I would have studied medicine.
I wish you had told me the truth.
I'd rather she had asked me before borrowing the car.
If sally had studied harder, she would have passed the exam.

We had hoped that you would be able to visit us.
I had meant/had intended to call on you, but was prevented from doing so.
She had thought of paying us a visit but the bad weather made her change her plans.
I hadn't expected that. That was something I hadn't expected.
They had wanted to, help but couldn't get here in time.
I hadn't for a minute supposed/expected that I should get the first prize
We had intended to go to Wales this summer.

I meant to have called on you but...’ , ‘We intended to have gone to Wales...’)

Past Perfect употребляется после выражений ‘it was the first’/’second that’ ...

It was the first time that I had heard her sing. (неправильно: ‘ ... that I heard ... ’)
It was the fifth time she had asked the same question. (неправильно: ‘he asked ... ’)
It was only the second opera I had seen in my life. (неправильно: ‘ I saw... )

3.18. Future Perfect

By this time next year I [will have crossed] three oceans and [(will) have seen] four or five continents.
By the time you get home I [will have cleaned] the house from top to bottom.
I haven't learnt those verbs yet but I'll have learnt them before the next lesson;
The builders say they will have finished the roof by Tuesday.
I'll have spent all my holiday money by the end of the week.

You will have heard the news.

3-19. Perfect Progressive Tenses

It has been raining, but it has stopped now.
I've been working for six hours and now I'll stop.
We've been learning this language for ten years (and are still learning it).

I don't feel like going out this evening. I've been working in the garden all day.
The children have been playing tennis. That's why they're so hot.
Please excuse my dirty clothes. I've been cleaning out the cellar.
Be careful! John has been painting the door.
We have been building a garage on to the house.
Hi! What have you been doing with yourself? – I've been trying to write a novel.
That kid has been watching TV non-stop since breakfast.
Have you been working in the garden all day? You look exhausted.
She's been writing the book since she was in her twenties and at last it's finished.
You look hot. - Yes, I've been running.
Sorry I'm late. Have you been waiting long?
I must just go and wash. I've been gardening.

People have been phoning me all day.
I've been waking up in the night a lot. I think I'll see the doctor.

Present Perfect Continuous часто употребляется с обстоятельствами, выражающими период времени, включающий и настоящий момент (recently, lately, this week, since… , for… и т.п.):

The firm has been losing money recently/lately.
John's been walking in Scotland all this week.
I've been doing a new job since January.
It's been raining for the last three days.

Past Continuous:

You look tired. - Yes. I was cycling from midday until five o'clock.
I've been cycling from midday until five o'clock ’.)

Present Perfect:

Have you known each other long? (неправильно: ‘Have you been knowing... ’)
I haven't liked ice cream since I ate too much and was sick (неправильно: ‘I haven't been liking... ’)
John's been ill all week (неправильно: ‘John's been being ill ... ’)
She's had a cold since Monday (неправильно: ‘She's been having a cold ... ’)
I've only known her for two days (неправильно: ‘I've only been knowing her ...’ )

3.20. Past Perfect Continuous/Progressive

At that time we [had been living] in the caravan for about six months.
When I found Mary, I could see that she [had been crying].
I went to the doctor because I [had been sleeping] badly.

She felt terrible during the interview because she [had been suffering] from flu since the previous day.
We'd been driving for about an hour when the engine suddenly stopped.
When I last saw John, he'd been running and was out of breath.

Past Perfect Continuous

‘It has been raining.’ → I told you it had been raining.
‘I've been driving for three hours and I'm tired.' → I told you I had been driving for three hours and was tired.

3-21. Future Perfect Continuous/Progressive

By the end of this month, we [shall have been learning] this language for ten years.
When George gets his degree, he [will have been studying] at Oxford for four years.
On Saturday, we [will have been living] in this house for a year.
Next year I [will have been working] in the company for 30 years.
I'll have been teaching for twenty years this summer.

Но опять же, в современных грамматиках такое сочетание рассматривается скорее как will + инфинитив: shall + have been learning

Action/Stative verbs

1. Глаголы be и have:

Go away. We are busy. We have a lot of work to do.

You are being impatient. I am still having my breakfast’).

Mammoths do not exist in the modern world.

COST (иметь стоимость)
How much does this book cost?

I weigh sixty-five kilos.

This room measures five metres by four.

My roses do not compare with yours.

George resembles his father in the way he walks.

DIFFER FROM (быть отличным от чего-либо)
My answer differs from yours in every detail.

This matter concerns you, I think.

DEPEND ON (быть зависимым)
Whether the meeting will be held or not depends on you.

DESERVE (быть достойным)'
I hope you win. You certainly deserve to.

INTEREST (быть интересным)
Archaeology interests me very much.

MATTER (быть важным)
It doesn't matter to me whether you like it or not.

This rule applies to everyone.

BELONG TO (быть собственностью)
This camera belongs to me.

STAND FOR (быть заменой для чего-либо)
The sign + stands for 'plus'.

HOLD (иметь)
How many people does this hall hold?

CONTAIN (иметь)
What does this package contain?

OWN (иметь)
Many people in this country own the houses they live in.

POSSESS (иметь)
She possesses considerable knowledge for a young girl.

I hear you.
Which judge is hearing the case?
My brother was hearing my recitation (проверять).

I'm listening to you.

I see you.
Jack is seeing a lot of Mary these days Who is seeing to the arrangement for the-next meeting?

I'm looking at you.

Do you smell something burning?
It smells sweet (пахнуть)
The dog is smelling the lamp-post (нюхать).

The milk tastes sour (иметь вкус).
Can you taste the ginger in this cake?
She is tasting the sauce.

These sheets feel damp
I feel a pin in it somewhere (чувствовать на ощупь) / I feel cold (чувствовать).
The doctor was feeling the boy's arm (ощупывать).

I can hear/ see/ feel/ smell/ taste something.

К ним относятся: assume, believe, care, consider, detest, envy, expect, fear, feel (= think), find (= consider), forget, hate, hope, imagine, know, like, love, mean, mind, notice, prefer, regret, remember, suggest, suppose, think, understand, want, wish и другие подобные.

We consider (= believe) him to be very loyal.
We are considering (=studying) your application.

I expect (=suppose) you're rather tired.
I am expecting (=waiting for) a visitor.

I feel (=think) you're right.
I'm feeling very hungry.

Does anyone mind (= object) if I open the window?
Is anyone minding ( = looking after) the baby while you're out?

I think (=believe) he's crazy.
Be quiet. I'm thinking (= giving thought to a problem).

3-23. Модальный глагол can/could

Кроме того may/might и can/could употребляются для выражения предположений.

п. (= I am able to = I have the ability to):

I [can use] a typewriter perfectly now.
He's over eighty but [can still read] without glasses.
She [can make] all her own dresses.
He [can speak] English.
Can you speak Swedish?
Dogs can't climb trees.
Can you lift this box?
Henry can lift 100 kilos.
My car can do 180 kph.
I can read Italian, but I can't speak it.
I can't visit you every day.
Can you translate this book?
The child is ten years old but can't read yet.
These roses can grow anywhere.
Can gases freeze?

2. Возможность в связи со сложившимися обстоятельствами (=I am able to=I have the chance to и =I am able to=I am free to):

We [can go] to Paris this weekend, because I don't have to work.
There are three possibilities: we [can go] to the police, we [can talk] to a lawyer, or we [can forget] all about it.
We can sit at home and watch football matches in comfort, thanks to television.
Come when you like. I can see you at any time.
Anybody who wants to can join the club.
I can't come out this evening: I have to see my brother.

I [(саn) hear] a dog barking somewhere.
I [(can)] see] Susan coming.
What did you put in the stew? I [(can) taste] something funny.
I [can't/don't understand] what she's talking about.
Do/Can you follow what he's saying?
I (can) remember your grandfather.

She speaks Greek. / She can speak Greek.
Do/Can you play the piano?

Can you wait a moment, please?
Jack, can you help me, please?
Can I have8 these shoes, please?
Can you come to the meeting tomorrow?
Саn you lend me three shillings?
Can I get you lemonade? – That's very nice of you.
Can I help you, sir? – No thank you. I'm being served.
Can I carry your bag? – Oh, thank you.

What can he mean?

(Похожим образом звучат предложения с ever, on earth, in the world, the devil: What ever does he mean? What on earth does he mean? What in the world does he want?)

What have you been able to find out? (не ‘What have you could... ?’)
I might be able to help you. (не ‘I might can... ’)
He hasn't been able to work recently.
She might not be able to fly to London.
He used to be able to speak German well.
Не seems (to be) quite unable to give up his bad habits.
Не seemed (to be) unable to give up his bad habits.

7. Be able to может употребляться и просто как замена can. Can предпочтительнее, чем be able to:

Watch me, Mum; I can stand on one leg. (не ‘...I'm able to stand on one leg’.)
I can see a ship. (более естественно, чем I am able to see a ship.)

CDs can now be copied easily (лучше, чем ‘CDs are now able to be copied...’)
He can't be understood. (лучше, чем ‘He's not able to be understood’.)

Can you cook? (более естественно, чем ‘Are you able to cook?’)
