1-23. Уточнители several, only, enough

We drove through [several towns].
Cinema is different from theatre in [several ways].
I fell [several times] yesterday when I was skiing.

We're [the only ones] who know the combination to the safe.
The new player is [the only hope of the team].
[The only thing you know how to do] is criticize others.

Уточнитель enough можно условно «привязать» к группе little/few, much/many – не много и не мало, а достаточно:

Have you got [enough milk]?
There aren't [enough glasses].

We haven't got [enough big nails].

We haven't got [big enough nails].

If only we had time enough...
I was fool enough to believe him.

I hardly had [the strength to take my clothes off].
I didn't quite have [the money to pay for a meal].

She's [old enough to do what she wants].
I haven't got [enough money to buy a car].
It's [late enough for the staff to stop work].
There was [just enough light for us to see what we were doing].

The radio's [small enough to put in your pocket]. (не ‘...to put it in your pocket’.)
Those tomatoes aren't [ripe enough to eat]. (не ‘...to eat them’.)

The radio was [small enough for me to put (it) in my pocket].
Those tomatoes aren't [ripe enough for the children to eat (them)].

1-24. Уточнители last и next

Last входит в смысловой ряд ‘the first, the second… the last’, а next образует «пару» с прилагательным previous.

п. The last week означает последние семь дней к настоящему моменту времени, the last month означает последние тридцать дней к настоящему моменту времени и т.п.:

I was ill [last week], but I'm OK this week. (не ‘I was ill the last week...’)
I've had a cold for [the last week]. I feel terrible.

We bought this house [last year].
We've lived here for [the last year], and we're very happy with the place.

The next week/ month

Goodbye - see you [next week]. (не ‘...see you the next week’.)
I'll be busy for [the next week]. (= the seven days starting today)

[Next year] will be difficult. (= the year starting next January)
[The next year] will be difficult. (= the twelve months starting now)

I've been busy for [the last three months]. (не ‘...for the three last months’.)
I'll be at college for [the next three years]. (не ‘...the three next years’.)

Обычно говорят the last few days/weeks… и the next few days…, а не the last days/weeks… или the next days:

[The last few days] have been busy. (не ‘The last days...’)
[The next few days] will be wet.

4. The last может означать 'the last in a series':

In [the last week of the holiday] something funny happened.
This is going to be [the last Christmas] I'll spend at home.

The next можно употреблять по отношению к месту, говоря о движении или указании направления, со значением 'after this/that one':

We get off at [the next station]. (= the station that we will come to next.)
It's not on this shelf; it's on [the next shelf up].

My girlfriend lives next door. Who works in [the next office]?
The people at the next table were having [a terrible argument].

Come and sit next to me.

1-25. Уточнители very и same

Не is [the very man you want] (немного формально).
They live at [the very edge of town].
She was mad about him from [the very first].

She didn't have [very much money].
Have you got [very much work to do]?

Но very much (как и much) обычно не употребляется в утвердительных предложениях:

There was [a lot of snow] on the road. (не ‘There was very much snow’.)

Уточнитель same

You've got [the same idea] as me. (не ‘...my same idea’.)
Her hair's [the same colour] as her mother's. (не ‘...the same colour like... ’)

2. В придаточных предложениях после the same… может употребляться who, that и as (эти слова могут и опускаться):

That's [the same man that/who asked me for money] yesterday.
He's wearing [the same shirt that/as he had on] yesterday.
He's wearing [the same shirt he had on] yesterday.

3. Употребляется выражение the very same (= exactly the same):

Our birthdays are on [the very same day].

1-26. Уточнители such и other

1. Such употребляется со значением 'like this/that', 'of this/that kind'. В случае употребления неопределенного артикля, such ставится перед ним: such people, such interesting ideas, such a decision (не ‘such decision’)

The committee wishes to raise fees. I would oppose [such a decision].
There are various forms of secret writing. [Such systems] are called 'codes'.

В разговорной речи вместо such употребляются выражения like this/that и this/that kind of:

In [a job like this] it's hard to get enough exercise.
[This kind of work] doesn't suit you at all.
... [systems like this] are called ...
He's got an old Rolls-Royce. I'd like [a car like that]. (не ‘I'd like such a car’)
[That kind of driving] causes accidents.

I'm glad your concert was [such a success].
Why did she make [such a fuss about the dates]?

I'm sorry you had [such a bad journey] (= You had a very bad journey, and I'm sorry.)
It was a pleasure to meet [such interesting people].

Вместо этого употребляется such ... that, или в очень формальном стиле such ... + as to + infinitive:

It was [such a cold afternoon] that we stopped playing (не ‘It was a very cold afternoon that... ’)
It was [such a loud noise] as to wake everybody in the house (менее формально: ‘...such a loud noise that it woke...’)

4. C помощью such as вводятся примеры:

My doctor told me to avoid [fatty foods such as bacon or hamburgers].

They're [such fools]. (не ‘They're so fools’.)
It was [such good milk] that we couldn't stop drinking it. (не ‘It was so good milk that... ’)
She's [such a baby].
I've never met [such a nice person].

She's so babyish. (не ‘She's such babyish’.)
The milk was so good that we couldn't stop drinking it.
Why do you talk so slowly?
We've got so much to do, and so little time.

(Со сравнительной степенью прилагательных употребляется so much, а не so: I'm glad you're feeling so much better).

1-27. Уточнитель other /another

1. Other употребляется

He's bought [another car] (не ‘...an other car’.)
I think we should paint it [another colour].
The engineers need [another drill].
My passport was buried under [the other papers].

In addition to [my other worries]…
Are there [any other hotels]?
[Two or three other people] have asked me that question.
Have you [some other shoes]?
There's [no other musician who plays this piece quite the way he does].

Sorry, I have [other things to do].

Could I have [another piece of bread]?

Would you like some more meat? (не ‘...other meat?’)
Would you like some more peas? (не ‘...other peas?’)

I'm staying for [another few weeks].
We need [another three chairs].

4. Other people часто значит 'people besides oneself':

Why don't you think more about [other people]?

I'd prefer a completely different colour. (не ‘...a completely other colour’.)
You look different with a beard. (не ‘You look other...’)

1-28. Уточнители what, which, whose

What, which и whose употребляются в качестве вопросительных уточнителей:

[Which teacher] do you like best?
[Which colour] do you want - green, red, yellow or brown?

[What writers] do you like?
[What colour] are your baby's eyes?

[Whose car] is that outside?
[Whose garden] do you think looks the nicest?

For [whose benefit] were all these changes made?
[Whose side] are you on?

I'm going to buy a car. - With [whose money]? (не ‘Whose money with?’)

Please make [less noise].
George gives me [the least trouble] (меньше, чем любой другой).

There were [fewer people] today than yesterday.
Harry made [the fewest mistakes] (из всех, кто делал упражнения).

LESS/FEWER

You should eat [less pasta].
There are [fewer cars] on the road today.

2. Чтобы подчеркнуть, что количество к удивлению велико, можно употреблять и no less than и no fewer than:

The team has had [no fewer than ten managers] in just five years/ ...no less than...)

This watch is [less expensive than that one].

LEAST/FEWEST

1. The least употребляется как превосходная степень little (противоположно по смыслу the most):

I think I probably do [the least work in this office].

3. The least

[The least expensive holidays] are often the most interesting.
I'm [least happy] when I have to work at weekends.

How old do you think he is? – [At least thirty].
He's been in love [at least eight times] this year.

We lost everything in the fire. But at least nobody was hurt.

George did [more work/exercises than anyone else].
So he did [the most work/ exercises].

MORE

1. More употребляется как сравнительная степень much и many:

We need [more time] (не ‘ ... more of time’.)
[More university students] are having to borrow money these days.

2. Употребляются обороты one more/ two more... и т.п..

There's just [one more river to cross].

As you get older you get more tolerant.
Please drive more slowly.

MOST

1. The most употребляется как превосходная степень much и many:

Susan found [the most blackberries] (больше других).
[The most work] is often done by the quietest worker.

Who earns (the) most money in your family?

[Most children] like ice cream. (не ‘The most children... ’ )
[Most cheese] is made from cow's milk.
[Most Swiss people] understand French. (не ‘Most of Swiss people...’)
[Most people] want a peaceful life.

I wasn't as clever as the others, but I was the most beautiful.
I work most efficiently in the early morning.

He's got [lots of men friends], but he doesn't know [many women]. (More natural than ‘He's got many men friends...’)
Did you buy any clothes? .- Yes, lots. (не ‘Yes, many’)
How much money have you got? - I've got plenty. (не ‘I've got much’.)

1. A lot of и lots of

[A lot of time] is needed to learn a language.
[Lots of patience] is needed, too. (не ‘Lots of patience are needed, too’.)
[A lot of my friends] want to emigrate. (не ‘A lot of my friends wants... ’)
[Lots of us] think it's time for an election.

There's not [a lot of meat left]. (не ‘There's not a lot meat left’.)

Don't rush. There's [plenty of time].
[Plenty of shops] take cheques.
There's no need to worry. We've got [plenty of money].
Have some more coffee. - No, thank you. I've had [plenty].

We took [lots of food and drink] on our walk through the hills/ ...plenty of...
Jim doesn't look well. He's lost [a lot of weight] (не 'plenty of')
[Plenty of shops] open on Sunday mornings.

1. Much и many:

We have [much (work) to do]/[many obstacles to overcome] before we can claim that real progress has been achieved.
[Much] has been written about unemployment.
In the opinion of [many economists], ...
[Much debate] has been heard about Thornton's new book.
There could be [many explanations] for this.
[Much of her fiction] describes women in unhappy marriages.

2. A great/good deal of, a large/considerable/substantial amount of и a large/considerable/great/substantial number of

Эти выражения звучат несколько более формально, чем a lot of и lots of:

A great/good deal of и a large amount of употребляются с неисчисляемыми существительными:

Mr. Lucas has spent [a great deal of time] in the Far East.
[A good deal of the exhibition] was devoted to her recent work.
I've thrown out [a large amount of old clothing].
[A large amount of the food] was inedible/ [Much of...]

A large number of

[A large number of problems] still have to be solved. (более естественно, чем ‘A large amount of problems ...’ / ‘A great deal of problems ...’ )
The book contains [a large number of pictures], many in colour/ ...many...

The manager must have spent [many a sleepless night] worrying about his team selection.
[Many a pupil] at the school will be pleased that Latin is no longer compulsory.

4. Обороты a good/great many:

She has [a good/great many friends] in New Zealand.

5. Обороты far too many/ far too much (со значением «слишком много»)

[Far too many students] failed the end-of-year math exam.
[Far too much time] is wasted filling in forms.

It cost several pounds. (не ‘It cost a lot of pounds’.)
They lived many miles from the town. (не ‘They lived plenty of miles from the town’.)

Обычно many (а не a lot of/lots) употребляются со словами, обозначающими время (days, minutes, months, weeks, years) и с числами + of (например: thousands of voters, millions of pounds):

We used to spend [many hours] driving to Melbourne and back.
He was the founder of a company now worth [many millions of pounds].

How much did it cost? – [A lot]. (= A lot of money.)
We should be all right for cheese - I've bought [plenty].
He does not often speak, but when he does he says [a great deal].

Выражения so much/many, as much/many и too much/many звучат вполне естественно в разговорной речи в утвердительных предложениях:

There was [so much traffic] that it took me an hour to get home.
I play [as much tennis] as I can.
You make [too many mistakes].
She won't drink this coffee. There's [too much sugar] in it.
There was [so much sugar] in the coffee that she could't drink it.

John's name (имя, которое носит Джон).
somebody (else)'s opinion (мнение кого-то еще)

a cat's tail, a dog's bark, an elephant's trunk.

3. Существительное в притяжательном падеже может быть в единственном числе - the boy's cap или во множественном - the boys' school.

Keats' poetry (the poetry of Keats)
Pepys' Diary (the Diary of John Pepys, /pi:ps/).

Archimedes' Law.

Притяжательный падеж обычно употребляется с одушевленными существительными, а для неодушевленных принадлежность выражается конструкцией с of: the leg of the chair, the foot of the mountain и т.п.

the side of the road/hill/mountain — the roadside/hillside/mountainside
the top of the hill/mountain — the hilltop/mountaintop.
The bank of the river — the riverbank.

Africa's future, America's resources, the committee's business, the club's finances, the country's needs, the earth's surface, London's traffic, the nation's affairs

a day's rest, an hour (and a half)'s drive, a month (or two)'s time, today's programme, a week's holiday, a year's work

keep someone at arm's length
keep out of harm's way
do something to one's heart's content
be only a stone's throw away

for goodness' sake

The name of the man over there/in the corner/who came yesterday.
