ФИЗИЧЕСКОЕ ПРОШЛОЕ

1. «Историческое настоящее» - прошедшие события описываются в настоящем времени (для придания некоторого драматизма – как будто мы присутствуем при происходящем):

The messenger arrives with news of the disaster. At once preparations are made to send relief to the victims of the flood. Boxes of food and bundles of clothing are loaded onto lorries...

Похожее употребление встречается также в рассказах и часто в анекдотах:

So I go into the office, and I see this man, and he says to me ...

So she goes up to the policeman. "There's a burglar in my house!" she says. "Are you sure of that?" asks the policeman. "Yes", she says. So the policeman goes to her house and starts looking for the burglar.

и также в сценариях, кратких изложениях и т.п.:

Hamlet sees the ghost of his father. The ghost tells him ...

■ Простое настоящее часто употребляется в заголовках в газетах:

QUAKE HITS CENTRAL IRAN
FOREIGN MINISTER RESIGNS
SCIENTISTS FIND BRIGHTEST STAR
FIRE BREAKS OUT IN HOTEL ROOM

2. Это же грамматическое время употребляется при ссылках на книги, журналы, письма, фильмы и т.п. – сказанное существовало в прошлом, существует сейчас и будет существовать в будущем:

The author of this book says that...
The newspaper says that it's going to be cold today.
John says in this letter that he's enjoying his holidays.
Thompson gives a list of the largest European companies in Chapter Six.
At the beginning of the book, three men find $4 million in a crashed plane.
In the film, Joan Smithson takes the role of a private detective.

Часто можно употребить и прошедшее время:

In The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky draws his characters from sources deep in the Russian soil.

Радиосообщение сразу же перестает существовать, поэтому в этом случае употребляется прошедшее время:

The ВВС weather report this morning said that we should have rain.

3. При передаче чужой речи в выражениях типа ‘I hear’, ‘I see’, ‘I gather’, ‘they say’:

I’ve never been paragliding myself, but they tell me it’s a really exciting sport.
Tamsin’s a good cook, I hear.
Grace says you told her to come over here.
I hear you're getting married.
I see there's been trouble down at the factory.
I gather Peter's looking for a job.
Jane tells me you're thinking of emigrating.

В таких случаях можно сказать и ‘I heard’, ‘I have heard’ И Т.П.

ФИЗИЧЕСКОЕ БУДУЩЕЕ

1. Будущие действия, которые произойдут по расписанию, утвержденному плану или вследствие очень твердого решения:

His train arrives at 11.46.
I start my new job tomorrow.
Professor Jackson retires next year.
I leave for Moscow tomorrow.
My plane leaves at three o'clock.
I'm busy all day tomorrow.
The summer term starts on May 11th.
I start my new job on Monday.
What time does the bus arrive in London?
Are you on duty next weekend?
What time do you finish work tomorrow? (имеется в виду расписание, в противном случае лучше употребить be + …ing).

(обычно в такого рода предложениях можно употребить и will)

2. В придаточных клозах в ряде случаев (в основном, в придаточных условных и времени):

Mr. Smith will telephone you as soon as he returns.
The police will take your car away if you park it there.
I'll kill anybody who touches my possessions.
After he finishes work, he’ll do the errands.
If Jane passes the bar exam, she’ll be able to practice law.

3. В предложениях вида 'Why don't you...'?

Why don't you take a day off tomorrow?

■ Иногда Simple Present употребляется для получения или дачи инструкций (касательно будущего):

Where do I pay?
Well, what do we do now?
So when you get to London you go straight to Victoria Station, you meet up with the others, Ramona gives you your ticket, and you catch the 17.15 train for Dover. OK?
