Теперь мы можем существенно расширить нашу таблицу возможностей заполнения той или иной роли:

Подлежащее

[1] группа существительного: [My brother] like apples.
[2] клоз-существительное:
[That the driver could not control his car] was obvious.
[What caused the accident] is a complete mystery.
[Whether she likes the present] is not clear to me.
[3] инфинитив: [To give up now] would be such a pity.
[4] герундий: [Sitting here in the sun] is very pleasant.

Глагол

Всегда глагольная группа: They [live] here, He [is sleeping], we [can go] now.

Дополнение

[1] группа существительного: She bought [a car].
[2] клоз-существительное:
We knew [that the next day would be difficult].
No one knows [what caused the accident].
I wonder [if/whether you've met him or not].
[3] инфинитив: Jack offered [to drive us to the airport].
[4] герундий: I enjoy [sitting here in the sun].

Комплемент

[1] группа существительного She is [a teacher].
[2] группа прилагательного. She is [very clever].
[3] клоз-существительное:
The main thing is [that you're happy].
The question is [what caused the accident].
My main problem right now is [whether I should ask for another loan].
[4.] инфиитив: A detective’s first job is [to collect the evidence].
[5.] герундий: My greatest pleasure is [sitting here in the sun].

Обстоятельство

[1] группа наречия: She runs [very fast].
[2] предложный оборот: She walked [in the park].
[3] обстоятельственные клозы: I met George [when I was at school].

[4] инфинитив: Two young girls came [to see you].
[5] причастие: (= нашему деепричастию) [Sitting here in the sun], we can see the hills.
[6] причастие: [Painted white], this house looks bigger.

Это полная картина, но еще надо учитывать, что дополнений и комплементов может быть два вида – о чем немного позже.

(И помним, что часто группа может быть представлена и одним словом).
